Honey and Garlic: Nature's Antibiotics

Updated: Apr 29

Nature is so complex and interesting, so it's no wonder that it even provides us with natural remedies. They can act as antibiotics, which are medicines that can fight bacterial infections. Here are two examples of such natural antibiotics!

HONEY

Honey contains hydrogen peroxide, which bacteria don't like because it can interfere with the structure of their cell walls and exterminate them. Also, honey's high levels of sugar attract water, which means that the bacteria will become dehydrated and unable to grow or divide.

Applying honey directly to an infected area can help destroy the bacteria and allow you to heal. You can also drink honey in an herbal tea or just hot water! Not only does it taste amazing, it can help soothe sore throats and get rid of the invading bacteria within you!

Although honey in general can be used as an antibiotic, Manuka honey is the type that will give you the most help with your illnesses with its anti-inflammatory properties!

GARLIC EXTRACT

Garlic is known to help boost your immune system because of the allicin in it. Crushing or obtaining an extract from garlic will give you the product of allicin since it is made from alliin and alliinase, which are contained in separate parts of a garlic clove.

Allicin is what gives off that garlic smell you either hate or love! It will inactivate the proteins in necessary bacterial processes, preventing the bacteria from growing and living.

The downside of using garlic is that it can be unsafe if consumed in large doses. This could lead to internal bleeding, so the recommended dosage amount is no more than two cloves per day. If you are on a blood-thinning medication, I would highly recommend consulting your doctor before trying garlic as a natural antibiotic! Eating garlic in large doses can increase the effects of your medication.

Otherwise, you can just apply garlic concentrate directly to the wound on your skin.

Nature is a great source of healing, and is an excellent way to find natural cures and preventives. I have only included two in this reading, but there are many more examples to try for yourself!
